Kiana Olafson

Kiana is an alumni of the UBC Faculty of Education and studied in the Indigenous Teacher Education Program (NITEP) majoring in Indigenous Elementary and Middle Years Education. She is from Cultus Lake, BC, but lived on campus throughout her studies. During her time at UBC, Kiana enjoyed attending lunches at the longhouse where she was able to connect with friends, classmates, and faculty, while also meeting new people and learning about the opportunities available for indigenous students.

What advice would you give to a high school student considering your program/ faculty/UBC?

If you are Indigenous and considering going into the field of education, NITEP is the program for you! I would highly recommend this program as it prepares its students for incorporating Indigenous knowledge and perspectives into education, while providing ample opportunities for practical experiences and observations. NITEP is also a smaller program at UBC, offering students the ability to meaningfully connect and feel as though they are a part of a community. The faculty, staff, and other students in NITEP have also remained an invaluable support system for me since the beginning of my time at UBC.

What kind of career has your program helped you pursue?

Since my graduation from NITEP in July 2020, I have been working as an Indigenous educator. I have spent this past year teaching grade 6 and look forward to any future opportunities I will have as I continue pursuing my career in this field.
