Nolan Chem

Previously completing his undergraduate science degree here at UBC, Nolan is now enrolled in his 3rd year in the UBC Faculty of Medicine. He is originally from Winnipeg, MB, and what drew him to the Vancouver campus was the beautiful scenery surrounded by both ocean and mountains. Nolan has been extensively involved with indigenous peoples and communities throughout his education, including working with the Vancouver Native Health Youth Initiative, Hope Air, and mentoring indigenous students interested in pursuing a career in medicine.

Nolan has also previously been granted an NSERC to conduct endocrinology research at BC Children’s Hospital and has also worked in the MRI research facility. Today, he has continued his research experience to focus on improving emergency access to rural and remote indigenous communities on Vancouver Island.

What advice would you give to a high school student considering your program/faculty/UBC?

Do not limit yourself – if there’s something you wanna do, go for it. Medicine is a long journey and I knew that from the beginning, but once you get that acceptance letter, it’s all worth it. Stay motivated, don’t be afraid to ask for help, and connect with your friends at the Longhouse. There are many opportunities available out there, especially for indigenous students, so go ahead and take them.

What are some highlights of your time in Vancouver, some favourite places to go, or activities to do outside of UBC?

Throughout my undergrad and medical school, I played hockey weekly in the recreational leagues organized at UBC. More recently, I have been cycling all around Vancouver and taking advantage of the beautiful roads and routes we have. During the winter months, I like to spend my weekends up in Whistler snowboarding with the awesome student season pass deal they have to offer.
